DECEMBER 10—JANUARY 22, 2011
LUIS DE JESUS LOS ANGELES
2685 S LA CIENEGA BOULEVARD
LOS ANGELES, CA 90034
For their debut exhibition with Luis De Jesus, Los Angeles-based artist Zackary Drucker, in collaboration with New York-based photographer Amos Mac, will present a new series of photographs (from Mac’s periodical Translady Fanzine) titled “Distance is where the heart is, home is where you hang your heart”. Infusing elements of photography, video, text and performance, Drucker’s work is rooted in cultivating and investigating under-recognized aspects of transgender history, locating herself in that history, and communicating her contemporary experience of gender and sexuality. Shot at her family’s home and high school alma mater in upstate New York during the winter of 2010, this new series plays off fashion photography and old Hollywood glamour photography to address relationships of spectacle-spectator / domesticated-exoticized / dominator-subjugated in an effort to humanize the reductive representations of queer and transgender people and simultaneously challenge their modes of misinterpretation. The exhibition will include a performance by Zackary Drucker (date and time to be announced).
